The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery gets a 'medialift'

DRPR had been in contact with the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) for some time when, on Monday, 29 January 2007, news about the death of a Melbourne liposuction patient prompted the ACCS to appoint DRPR immediately. Even though the ACCS and its members were in no way involved in the tragedy, it was imperative for the College to voice its concern about the need for new rules that would raise surgery standards and protect patients.

Doing the public relations for a cosmetic surgery body tends to be a very reactive process as there is a constant need to comment on various issues, whether they have happened in Australia or offshore. DRPR's work with the ACCS has therefore focused on issues management, in both a reactive and proactive sense.

For its period of appointment, DRPR implemented PR activities that helped raise awareness of the ACCS and build its credibility – two objectives that had been determined as essential in light of the College's application for cosmetic surgery to be approved as a specialty by the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

Some of DRPR's tasks were to advise ACCS spokespeople before media interviews, assist in the promotion of the ACCS Conference which was held in Melbourne in April 2007 and provide content for its website.

A key objective for DRPR was to build closer relationships with key medical writers who write stories for main metropolitan newspapers, television programs and radio stations across Australia. This was particularly important as there is a lot of confusion amongst the general Australian public about the difference between cosmetic medicine and plastic surgery. Thus it was vital for DRPR to communicate with these influential contacts to increase their understanding of the issue. This resulted in journalists regularly contacting DRPR for comments from the ACCS on various cosmetic surgery topics.

Prior to DRPR's appointment, the majority of media queries about cosmetic surgery were directed to the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons. Now the ACCS has its voice heard through the media both alongside the plastic surgeons and on its own, raising awareness of the organisation and its stances on prominent issues in the industry.
