MEDIA RELEASE 01 July 2008
Are your natural health products really natural?
More and more Australians are taking natural supplements to compensate for
dietary deficiencies. Multivitamins, calcium and fish oil are some of the top
selling supplements in Australia according to niche distributor Planet Health.
Melinda Hunt, nutritionist and senior product manager for Planet Health,
stresses that not all supplements are created equal. Consumers spend a
considerable amount of money each year on synthetic multivitamin supplements as
a result of misinformation regarding their origin and effectiveness.
"The most popular multivitamin formulas sold today are predominantly synthetic,
which means that the nutrients are 'man-made' in a laboratory rather than coming
from a natural whole food source. However, many studies have shown that
nutrients from whole foods are better digested and absorbed than their synthetic
counterparts," Hunt said.
Planet Health distributes naturally derived supplements covering many areas
including Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina (a nutrient rich wholefood supplement),
Lifestream Natural Calcium (a calcium rich sea vegetable) and Efamol Efalex (an
essential fatty acid supplement combining fish oil and evening primrose oil).
Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina
Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina contains the richest concentration of nutrients
known in any food, grain or herb on Earth.
Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina contains all the essential amino acids, together
with glycogen to enhance energy levels, vitality and stamina. This all natural,
whole food nutrition supplement supports healthy blood sugar levels, helps
manage cravings, and promotes mental clarity and focus.
Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina is a daily whole food supplement which can
particularly benefit people feeling run down, exhausted or lacking in energy. It
is also useful for people exercising regularly (including athletes), pregnant or
breast feeding women, children, teenagers and the elderly.
Lifestream Bioactive Spirulina is available at pharmacies and health food stores
Australia wide in powder, tablet and capsule form, with a RRP from $19.95.
Lifestream Natural Calcium
Lifestream Natural Calcium is the only certified organic, non-synthetic, dairy
free calcium supplement.
Calcium is one of the most essential minerals needed by our body. Calcium is
vital for building strong bones, healthy nails and teeth and for maintaining
bone strength and density later in life.
Lifestream Natural Calcium is 100% Lithothamnium Calcareum - a natural sea
vegetable. Unlike many synthetic calcium supplements, Lifestream Natural Calcium
contains no limestone, no crushed cow bones, no chalk and no artificial or added
preservatives.
Lifestream Natural Calcium is available at pharmacies and health food stores
across Australia in both powder and capsule form with a RRP from $19.95.
Efamol Efalex
Efalex, produced by UK company Efamol Ltd, is a unique combination of high DHA
tuna oil (Omega-3) and pure Rigel® evening primrose oil (Omega-6), providing the
essential fatty acids needed for the healthy functioning of almost every cell in
the human body.
Nancy Morse, chief scientific officer of Efamol, explained that these so-called
'good fats' are essential for maintaining brain performance.
"About 60 per cent of the human brain is made of fat and the most abundant fatty
acid in the brain is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Since our body can not produce
essential fatty acids, we need to ensure that they are present in sufficient
quantities in our diet or through supplementation," she said.
The Efalex formulation is specifically designed to help children with
concentration, learning and mood. This supplement is also beneficial for people
of all ages seeking to maintain healthy brain and eye function.
Efamol Efalex is available at pharmacies and health food stores Australia wide
in both liquid and capsule form with a RRP from $16.90.
