Disabled artist’s amazing talent featured in national Christmas card range
The artwork of several esteemed Mouth and Foot Painting Artists is being featured in a national Christmas range, which has been sent to households across Australia and includes a variety of cards, gift tags, wrapping paper, bookmarks, calendars, books, jigsaw puzzles and framed prints.

The Christmas range, which is produced by the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA), includes the artwork of disabled artists from around the world together with several Australian artists including Victoria’s Kate Frawley who paints professionally using a brush held in her mouth.

Kate, whose painting ‘Peace on earth’ was chosen as a card for this year’s range, began painting with a brush held in her mouth after a car accident in 1976 left her quadriplegic. A Student Member of the MFPA since 1993, Kate painted the beautiful dove scene for a book on Peace that the MFPA produced some years ago.

“Because of the war-torn times that we live in, the card represents the peace that today’s society needs.

“The wording in the card is a wish for peace and happiness and matches the image perfectly.

“Peace is something that you can’t buy, but you can try to spread it, especially at a special time like Christmas,” said Kate.

MFPA is a self-help organisation which gives disabled people the opportunity to fulfil their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence, by selectively selling their highly regarded works of art.

MFPA was founded in 1956 by a group of mainly Swiss, French, British and German artists. It was founded in 1970 in Australia and now has a membership of over 700 disabled artists in more than 70 countries throughout the world.

To become a Student Member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an illness or accident. Once an artist becomes a Full Member or Associate they are guaranteed a salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting.
