Synthetic sporting fields in Australia? Only a matter of time
It is only a matter of time before Australia follows the rest of the world and
starts using synthetic grass for sporting fields, according to John Curtis, CEO
of TEAM sports surfaces.
“Like many parts of the world, we believe that synthetic surfaces are the way of
the future for all football codes at stadium and municipal venues,” Curtis said.
“They offer a sustainable business solution for councils, clubs and
administrators grappling with maintenance costs, water restrictions, poor wear
and tear and injuries resulting from damaged turf.
“Synthetic playing surfaces have considerable potential for sporting venues and
will help ensure the safety of players with the synthetic turf itself featuring
the shock absorption characteristics of natural grass – essential for running,
tackling and sliding, and for reducing the risk of friction burn,” he said.
Nick Pye, Managing Director for Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay said that the
synthetic rugby pitch installed by TEAM has added value to the Centre.
“The rugby pitch is one of the best things we have at the centre. The majority
of teams we house are field sports like the Rugby League, Union and Soccer,” Pye
said.
“We have had some big Rugby Union teams train on the pitch including the
Wallabies, Reds and Hurricanes as well as quite a few Rugby League teams
including the Bulldogs, Eels, Rabbitohs, Broncos, Tigers and both State of
Origin teams.
“There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from people who have used
the pitch. At first people don’t realise that it is synthetic, they just think
that we keep the grass really healthy.
“Everything revolves around the field. It is the focal point to what we do,” he
said.
TEAM Sports Surfaces will showcase their range of synthetic sporting fields at
the upcoming Sports Business Summit on Thursday 15 September at Telstra Stadium.
TEAM produce new generation synthetic sporting surfaces that have been embraced
by sporting facilities worldwide. TEAM is a FIFA recommended licensee and has
installed sporting surfaces in Jalan Besar Stadium Singapore and Seoul World Cup
Park Korea to mention a few.
