MEDIA RELEASE 14 June 2007
New outdoor adventure retailer opens first WA store in Joondalup
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda opened its first WA store today in the
northern Perth suburb of Joondalup.
CEO Toby Darvall visited the store just prior to the opening day and was pleased
to be making his first foray into the west.
"The store looks great! The Anaconda team has done a fantastic job getting the
store ready for the big day. It is Western Australia's largest camping and
adventure superstore and I'm confident it will be a great success," he said.
"Customers are given the opportunity to have some fun whilst trialling the
products in-store with a climbing pinnacle rock wall, a stove and lantern test
station, a fish tank and much more," Toby said.
Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share
in a camping & army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years
previously. He had previously been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular
daily, The Age.
The Joondalup store takes the total number of Anaconda stores to seven – four in
Queensland, one in NSW, one in Victoria and now one in Western Australia.
"Our research told us that West Australians love getting outside to experience
the great natural wonders of their home state so it's an obvious place for us to
want to set up the new store," Darvall said.
"We are planning on opening more stores in WA next year, most likely in
Fremantle and Kalgoorlie.
"At Anaconda we pride ourselves on inspiring, equipping and enabling people to
get outdoors and experience their own adventure. Anaconda is for all outdoor
types from hardcore adrenalin junkies to families on holiday and the whole
spectrum of people in-between," he added.
The new store, located at 6 The Gateway, occupies 3,000 square metres and offers
over 35,000 products for camping, fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from
such famous brands as The North Face, Columbia, Merrell, Garmin, Macpac, Kona,
Edelrid as well as Anaconda exclusive brands Spinifex, Denali, Mojiko Tactical,
Canyon, Dune and Fluid and others. For customers who haven't decided to invest
in the equipment and want to trial it first, Anaconda not only sells products
but also rents a range of them out.
The new store employs over 30 staff headed up by Store Manager, Joffrey Noel.
Joffrey is a Perth local and is looking forward to the challenge. He has a
background in surf and clothing retail and is also a qualified ski and snowboard
instructor.
