MEDIA RELEASE 15 June 2007

Anaconda Adventure Race series
The first Anaconda Adventure Race of the season will kick off at the Gold Coast, Qld on 5 August 2007. This will be followed by Forster in NSW, Geographe Bay in WA and Lorne in Victoria.

This is the third year of Anaconda Adventure races which began with the first race in Lorne in December 2005.

Adventure racing is a relatively new sport that attracts 'every day' people and elite athletes from around the globe. Adventure racing has emerged as the big brother to marathons, road races and triathlons. According to Adventure Sports Magazine, adventure racing has expanded from 12 races held in 1998, to over 500 scheduled in the year 2005 and has sometimes been called the off-road triathlon.

A typical Anaconda Adventure Race includes ocean swimming, kayaking, cross country running, orienteering and mount biking.

Australia is an ideal country to hold these events because of the many long beaches with close proximity to bushland. Adventure racing is also popular in New Zealand where the annual 'Coast to Coast' race is run, which sets up some great trans-Tasman rivalries.

Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda is the principal sponsor of the race series which is run by Rapid Ascent headed up by former Olympic Kayaker John Jacoby who has competed in many adventure-style races around the world.

Typically, the Anaconda adventure races are run over one day with around 600 competitors who race individually and in teams. It generally takes four hours for a trained person to complete the race and eight to 10 hours for an average person.

In previous years, the races have attracted a number of celebrity contenders like former Surf ironman Guy Andrews who has a number of wins under his belt.

This year's series includes:
Sunday, 5 August - Tugun Gold Coast
Saturday, 22 and Sunday, 23 September - Forster, NSW
Sunday, 4 November - Geographe Bay, WA
Sunday, 9 December - Lorne, Victoria

The races have their own unique characteristics to suit their terrain but all include a combination of running, cycling, swimming and kayaking.
