Out of sight water tank that captures more water
A new design of water tank that goes under the house and allows homeowners to use the full surface area of their roof to capture water is proving a popular alternative to the traditional water tank.

Traditional water tanks only capture water from one side of the roof, and must sit outside the house. The new Rain Reviva tanks are sealed, flexible bladders, which are suitable to install under the house. As more rainwater can be diverted into the tanks, they can capture up to 500% more water than the standard tank.

Jim Brown of Burraneer in Sydney’s South said he likes his new tank system, which can store over 4000 litres, because it stays out of sight.

“We didn’t want a water tank outside because it would look ugly.

“We were able to fit it through the cavity to get under the house and we can keep it there because the tank is designed like a flexible bladder. It’s linked to all the down pipes, and although we haven’t had much rain in Sydney in recent months it fills up very well when it does rain.

“We can use our sprinklers once or twice a week and I reckon our grass is greener than most of our neighbours. We also use it to wash the car,” said Brown.

In addition to the water tank, the system incorporates an ‘inlet diversion’ – a ‘swing arm’ system that efficiently diverts the rainwater from each downpipe into the water sacs – and a pump system that allows the water to be reticulated to the garden hose and other irrigation tools.

Andrew Pearce, Managing Director of New Water, the suppliers of Rain Reviva tanks, believes they work far more effectively than the traditional tank, which is not able to capture water in the same way and typically takes much longer to fill.

“Up to 30,000 litres of water can be stored underneath a house using this style of tanking system, which can make a considerable difference to a household’s tap-water usage,” Pearce said.

“Homeowners need to think seriously about how rainwater tanks can make a real difference, and we believe this is the best way to harness rainwater and store the water. The fact that the tanks stay out of site is an obvious bonus,” he said.

New Water sells the Rain Reviva system through a network of over 25 distributors throughout the country. The system is sold as a full kit, which includes a pump and pressure control mechanism.

The company is also in the process of launching a system that recycles household grey-water.
