Ahipara mouth artist Kevin Griffiths paints his way into Christmas
Mouth painting artist and Ahipara resident, Kevin Griffith, has his artwork included in the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) 2011 Christmas card range. These are sold throughout New Zealand to enable the members to earn a living, support their family and live as independently as possible.

Paralysed from the neck down after hitting his head in a pool at the age of 13, Kevin's life took a dramatic turn.

However, despite his accident Kevin admits to never becoming depressed about his situation, and ensures that he makes the most out of the life he has been given.

"I've had a great life. I've done a lot in the time I've been in the chair, and I like to share this with others who are in a similar situation," said Kevin.

In this year's range of Christmas cards Kevin's desire to bring joy shines through his portrayal of Santa Claus cradling a present on Christmas Day.

"I thought this sentiment would be great as a mini card to find on Christmas Day. I get much enjoyment painting and knowing that customers can send these cards to friends and family all over the world to enjoy," said Kevin.

Kevin believes that having his artwork on this year's Christmas tag range is a great honour.

"It's a great feeling when you find out your work is in a range of cards which will be seen internationally. I hope that my artwork can put a smile on people's faces on Christmas Day," said Kevin.

For over 40 years, the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists' Christmas cards and calendars have been distributed to millions of households around Australia and New Zealand.

About the MFPA

Founded in 1956 by a group of European artists, the MFPA is a self-help organisation which gives people with disabilities the opportunity to fulfil their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence by selectively selling their artworks.

The MFPA was established in New Zealand in 1961 and currently has 20 members.

To become a student member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an illness or accident. Student members receive scholarships for art supplies and tuition. Once an artist becomes a full member or associate they are guaranteed a salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting.
