Decorating the bathroom with natural light
Skylights and the natural light they provide work well as a design feature in the bathroom as they can brighten colours, give a feeling of space while still retaining privacy and also save on power bills.

Bathrooms tend to have limited natural lighting as windows are usually small and frosted to retain privacy. Natural light and ventilation in a bathroom has a positive effect on the overall ambiance of the room as well as helping control mould and mildew.

Two large Skydome skylights were installed in the bathroom of a recently completed architecturally-designed home in Point Frederick on NSW's Central Coast. Situated on the southern side of the home, the main bathroom receives all its direct natural light via the two square skylights installed above the dual basin, while still retaining privacy from the two-storey building next door.

The natural light provided by the skylights is maximised and evenly diffused around the room by the glossy white tiles and the large vanity mirrors. The skylights were positioned to also light up the shower recess which otherwise would have been dark. The skylights provide enough light so that no artificial light is required during the day.

Lightwells were built to guide the daylight from the roof to the room below while also creating a dramatic design effect. To minimise the effects of the midday sun and diffuse the light, a smoke-grey tint was chosen for the skylights' outer glazing. In addition, the glazing used for Skydome skylights is manufactured using Skyguard™, a material that is UV-stabilised and eliminates 99 per cent of harmful UV rays.

The effect is a modern bathroom with abundant natural light that gives a sense of space and a feeling of wellbeing while still retaining much needed privacy.

Skydome managing director Michael Bonello says skylights are ideal for bathrooms.

"The light from skylights is natural and doesn't cause the same harsh shadows that artificial lighting does, creating a more pleasant environment," he added.

While improving the ambiance, certain skylights in the bathroom can also provide ventilation to remove moist air, odours and mould.

"We developed our Skytube model to be available with ventilation options either natural or mechanical. Our trio model even includes an electric light with an extraction system and a skylight," said Bonello.

Skydome skylights are available in four varieties each with unique features and applications: Skydome, Skytube, Skywindows and glass Skydomes.

Skydome, a member of the Skylight Industry Association, was established in 1976 by Michael Bonello and the company and its products are officially recognised as Australian Owned and Made.
