NSW school students take equivalent of 5000 cars off the road by being green
Over 48,000 school students across NSW have taken the equivalent of 5000 cars off the road and saved over 300 million litres of fresh water through participation in a scheme to save the environment. At the same time they are expected to raise about $100,000 for their schools.

A total of 155 schools joined Easy Being Green’s campaign to install ‘Climate Saver Packs’ free of charge in a million homes in NSW and the ACT to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

A standard Pack contains six energy saving light globes and one AAA rated water saving showerhead, worth about $100 retail.

Students encouraged householders to sign up for a Pack by distributing application forms throughout the community. For every valid application form signed by householders and lodged via a school, Easy Being Green agreed to donate $5 to the school.

Students participating in the scheme distributed over 21,000 Climate Saver Packs within the community.

CEO at Easy Being Green, Paul Gilding, yesterday applauded the ‘Climate Saver Schools’, saying the program is part of a wider campaign to help the environment and raise money for local schools.

“The program was designed to encourage schools and students to be champions of the environment through practical action. We aim to keep helping students to save water and energy while raising enough money to make a real difference to their schools in NSW,” Gilding said.

“For each Pack installed, students are helping householders save one tonne of greenhouse gas pollution from entering earth’s atmosphere and an average of 21,000 litres of water each year. Householders are also saving $150 off both their annual electricity and water bill.

“Based on 21,000 Packs, students have potentially saved 21,000 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere each year and invested in the future of our earth. That’s equivalent to taking over 5000 cars off the road, and they’ll also save over 300 million litres of fresh water a year.

“Due to the massive response from students, delivery of the packs will take place over the next few months along with processing of forms. Schools should expect to receive the money before the next school year starts,” he said.

Easy Being Green currently provides energy efficient light globes and water saving showerheads free of charge through a verified home-installation process. With verified installation, Easy Being Green can provide homes in its target areas with globes for every suitable light socket in the home and showerheads for all showers.
