MEDIA RELEASE 17 June 2009
Moruya mouth painting artist's work features in mid-year greeting card
range
Moruya mouth painting artist Margaret Greig has had one of her paintings
selected for inclusion in the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) 2009 mid
year greeting card range. The mid year range consists of cards, calendars,
bookmarks, gift wrap and tags.
Margaret's painting chosen for reproduction is titled 'Cuddles'. The artwork is
an oil painting of a Koala in a gum tree, highlighting the spectacular
Australian flora and fauna.
"The Koala is a wonderful symbol of Australia and an animal which appeals to
many people. Our native animals have always been a great source of inspiration
for my artwork" Margaret said.
In 1959 at the age of thirteen, Margaret contracted polio which left her a
quadriplegic. It was only after 15 months of extensive physiotherapy that
Margaret began to re-learn how to write by holding a pen in her mouth.
In 1970, Margaret became a member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists
Association (MFPA), opening a whole new world of independence. Over the past 39
years, Margaret has been an active member of the Association.
Margaret grew up in the Moruya area and then spent many years in Londonderry in
the Hawkesbury district of NSW. She recently returned to settle in Moruya to be
nearer to her family.
Margaret has taken part in several exhibitions and art demonstrations as well as
having her art published for the MFPA card range.
"I've had different styles of my work published in both the mid-year and
Christmas MFPA card ranges over the years, from landscapes to floral works to
traditional Christmas themes," Margaret said.
"I'm really pleased when my paintings are published. I get a lot of positive
feedback about my work, and it's great to know that people all over Australia
are receiving cards with my paintings on them," said Margaret.
The greeting card range is currently being sent out to customers throughout
Australia and can be ordered online at www.mfpa.com.au.
Founded in 1956 by a group of European artists, the MFPA is a self-help
organisation which gives people with disabilities the opportunity to fulfil
their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence by
selectively selling their artworks.
The MFPA was established in Australia in 1971 and currently has 17 members
around the country.
To become a student member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held
in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an
illness or accident. Student members receive scholarships for art supplies and
tuition. Once an artist becomes a full member or associate they are guaranteed a
salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting.
