MEDIA RELEASE 18 April 2008
New outdoor adventure retailer coming to Tasmania
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda will open its first Tasmanian store in the
Hobart suburb of Cambridge on Saturday, 3 May 2008.
Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share
in a camping & army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years
previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular
daily, The Age.
"Tasmania is an obvious location for a large outdoor retail store like Anaconda.
Tasmanians and the tourists that visit the Apple Isle engage in outdoor
activities year-round and now they'll have the opportunity to get kitted out
before setting out on their adventure," Darvall said.
"Our research told us that Tasmania was under-supplied with outdoor retail
opportunities so we expect the new store to be great success from day one.
"At Anaconda we pride ourselves on inspiring, equipping and enabling people to
get outdoors and experience their own adventure. Anaconda is for all outdoor
types from hardcore adrenalin junkies to families on holiday and the whole
spectrum of people in-between.
"The concept behind the stores is based on our belief that Australians want to
be entertained and have fun whilst they are shopping so pieces of equipment such
as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be tested in-store.
Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock-climbing are in all our stores to give
customers a feel of the 'real experience'.
"The new store will open with a big bang with a fireworks display on the
Saturday evening. Plus, there'll be give-aways in the store and some great
opening specials," added Darvall.
Anaconda currently has ten stores - four in Queensland, one in NSW, two in
Victoria, two in WA and one in SA, with expansion plans throughout Australia in
the near future.
Cambridge Store Manager Aaron McClimont, is looking forward to the challenge.
"We have recruited around 40 local staff and training is underway. My management
team and I have background in outdoor and camping retailing and we're so excited
about the idea of sharing this experience with our customers," McClimont said.
The new store, to be located at the Harvey Norman Centre, 66 Kennedy Drive,
Cambridge, occupies 3,500 square metres and will offer over 35,000 products for
camping, fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The
North Face, Columbia, Merrell, Garmin, Kona, Edelrid as well as Anaconda
exclusive brands Spinifex, Denali, Mojiko Tactical, Canyon, Dune and Fluid and
others. For customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to
trial it first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them
out.
