MEDIA RELEASE 18 June 2008
Anaconda serves thousands at opening weekend
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda opened its Penrith store on Saturday, 14
June 2008 and had an estimated 8,000 people through the doors on the first day
with people queuing from 4.45 am.
Store manager Ben MacDonald was thrilled with the turnout.
"Our 30 staff, many of whom have a background in outdoor and camping retailing,
were kept on their toes throughout the opening weekend and are keen to maintain
the momentum," he said.
"We gave away our 500 free gift bags in five minutes to many of the 1,300 people
who lined up for the 8 am store opening on Saturday. We had the first customer
line up at 4.45 am," McDonald added.
Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share
in a camping and army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years
previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular
daily, The Age.
The concept behind the stores is based on Anaconda's belief that Australians
want to be entertained and have fun while they are shopping. Therefore, pieces
of equipment such as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be
tested in-store. Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock climbing are also in all
Anaconda stores to give customers the feel of the 'real experience'.
Anaconda currently has 12 stores - two in NSW, four in Queensland, two in
Victoria, two in WA, one in SA and one in Tasmania with expansion plans
throughout Australia in the near future.
The new store, to be located in the Penrith Homemaker Centre, occupies 3,500
square metres and offers over 35,000 products for camping, fishing, climbing,
cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The North Face, Columbia,
Coleman, Spinifex, Mojiko, Merrell, Garmin, Fluid Bikes, Edelrid and Denali. For
customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to trial it
first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them out.
The Anaconda Penrith store can be contacted on (02) 4733 0250.
