Innovative water solutions for National Water Week
National Water Week, held from 21 to 27 October, is a great time to consider ways to save water in the home and garden. 'Water for life' is again the theme for this year's National Water Week, which highlights the importance of taking an integrated approach to water resource management.

According to research by water solutions company and founding member of the Australian Grey Water Institute, New Water, widespread community use of rainwater storage and grey water treatment has the potential to delay and complement environmentally damaging infrastructure projects such as desalination plants, which are now being built all over Australia.

"National Water Week is a great opportunity to focus on how home owners can save considerable quantities of drinkable water at the household level," said CEO of New Water, Andrew Pearce.

"For example, our research has shown that by installing 156,000 domestic grey water treatment systems in Melbourne, households would save an equivalent quantity of water to that of the proposed desalination plant in Victoria. This is in addition to saving the government and tax payers over $1 billion over 10 years and considerably reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This example could be applied all around Australia," he added.

New Water has developed an Aqua Reviva system which treats grey water from the bathroom and laundry to Class A standard for safe re-use around the home including surface garden irrigation and sprinklers, to flush toilets or use in the washing machine. The system can also be operated using solar power.

The award-winning system has been approved by the relevant State Health and other Government Departments. It has also recently been awarded the 'Smart Approved Watermark', the nation's reference for choosing products, services and organisations that are reducing outdoor water use.

"The system constantly recycles grey water and so it can easily provide the home with a steady supply of water for everyday use, even in periods when there is minimal rain to replenish rainwater tanks," Pearce said.

All New Water products are Australian designed and made. The company also sells Microslim, Slimline and In-slab tanks.
