Mouth painter to exhibit at two local art shows
Hamilton mouth painting artist Toni Fox will be exhibiting her artwork in the month-long Waikato Society of Arts exhibition. It will run from 27 June to 28 July and is being held at ArtsPost Gallery on Victoria St, Hamilton.

Toni will be displaying a painting entitled 'Island Bloom', which depicts of a hibiscus flower. It is a watercolour inspired by summer.

"I have been involved with the society over the past year and it's great to be involved in their tenth anniversary celebration exhibition," said Toni.

Toni has been in a wheelchair for 15 years after a competitive trampolining accident in which she broke her neck. She took up mouth painting after leaving the Otara spinal unit and has been a student member of the MFPA for the past six years.

Toni will also be exhibiting at the 'One Size Fits All' exhibition, which begins on 16 July and runs until 1 August at Thornton Gallery, 298 Barton Street, Hamilton.

"I'm exhibiting a painting called 'Curtain Call' which is a filigree pattern on canvas. I've also incorporated glitter in this artwork to give it an interesting dimension," Toni said.

Toni's work will be displayed with around 100 other entries to be judged at the end of the exhibition. This will be done through public voting throughout the course of the exhibition.

Founded in 1956 by a group of European artists, the MFPA is a self-help organisation which gives people with disabilities the opportunity to fulfil their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence by selectively selling their artworks.

The MFPA was established in New Zealand in 1961 and currently has 20 members.

To become a student member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an illness or accident. Student members receive scholarships for art supplies and tuition. Once an artist becomes a full member or associate they are guaranteed a salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting.
