Anaconda serves thousands at opening weekend
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda opened its Frankston store on Saturday, 18 October 2008 and had over 5,500 people through the doors on the first day with over 800 people waiting for the doors to open from 7.15 am.

Store manager Craig Wallace was thrilled with the turnout.

"Our 50 staff, many of whom have a background in outdoor and camping retailing, were kept on their toes throughout the opening weekend and are keen to maintain the momentum," he said.

"We gave away our 500 free gift bags in five minutes to the people who lined up for the 8 am store opening on Saturday.

"Customers really enjoyed trying out the in-store climbing pinnacle and our permanently set-up kayak test pool and was a huge hit with the kids," said Wallace.

Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share in a camping and army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular daily, The Age.

The concept behind the stores is based on Anaconda's belief that Australians want to be entertained and have fun while they are shopping. Therefore, pieces of equipment such as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be tested in-store. Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock climbing are also in all Anaconda stores to give customers the feel of the 'real experience'.

Anaconda now has 13 stores – two in NSW, four in Queensland, three in Victoria, two in WA, one in SA and one in Tasmania with expansion plans throughout Australia in the near future.

The new store, located in the Frankston Power Centre, occupies 3,000 square metres and offers over 35,000 products for camping, fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The North Face, Columbia, Coleman, Spinifex, Mojiko, Merrell, Garmin, Fluid Bikes, Edelrid and Denali. For customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to trial it first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them out.

The Anaconda Frankston store can be contacted on (03) 8796 0500.
