Leading rainwater tank supplier critical of HIA submission
Leading rainwater tank supplier, New Water, believes the Housing Industry Association (HIA) submission to the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission, which questions the return on investment of rainwater tanks, is narrow minded and inaccurate.

“We believe this is grossly misleading and narrow minded. The HIA suggests in their submission that the cost of installation is not worth the savings on your water bill,” said Andrew Pearce, CEO of New Water.

“It fails to acknowledge the fact that the installation of rainwater tanks in homes will help conserve the water in our damns, which are running dry in many regions around Australia.

“The HIA has also failed to equate that a rainwater tank adds considerable value to a household by allowing the owner to maintain their lawn and gardens during water restrictions, which experts suggest can add significant value to the property.

“The Wakelin Property Advisory group has previously suggested that a garden that is well maintained and looked-after can account for up to $20,000 of a property’s value compared with a house where the garden is unattractive and not cared for, and that this could potentially ‘chase away buyers’.

“The HIA has missed the big picture when it comes to assessing the cost benefit of rainwater tanks and, even worse, has ignored the overwhelming environmental benefits,” said Pearce.

New Water supplies the Australian market with a new design of water tank that goes under the house and allows homeowners to use the full surface area of their roof to capture water. The company also offers sophisticated grey water solutions for households.
