Dorrigo mouth painting artist Gary Atkins to exhibit at Easter exhibition
Mouth painting artist and Dorrigo resident, Gary Atkins who is a student member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) will be exhibiting his unique artwork at the Creative Mountain Arts Exhibition to be held in Dorrigo from 5 to 14 April 2012.

Gary will be exhibiting two of his artworks including an acrylic entitled 'Pilbara Dreaming' and an oil painting called 'Harbour Waiting'.

Gary was encouraged to try mouth painting by an occupational therapist, while recovering in hospital after a diving accident left him a quadriplegic. Initially Gary experimented with black and white sketches and moved on to oils three years later. He was awarded a Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) student membership in 1981.

Since becoming a student member of MFPA, Gary has experimented with several mouth painting techniques and developed a true passion for art.

"Painting enables me to be free. It is the best source of relaxation. There is nothing better than being outside with my paints, surrounded by nature", said Gary.

Gary's work can be viewed at the Creative Mountain Arts Exhibition in the Dorrigo Community Hall from Thursday, 5 April to Saturday, 14 April 2012. The exhibition is hosted by The Arts Council of the Dorrigo and is open from 10 am to 4 pm.

Founded in 1956 by a group of European artists, the MFPA is a self-help organisation which gives people with disabilities the opportunity to fulfil their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence by selectively selling their artworks.

The MFPA was established in Australia in 1971 and currently has 16 members around the country.

To become a student member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an illness or accident. Student members receive scholarships for art supplies and tuition. Once an artist becomes a full member or associate they are guaranteed a salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting.
