The Anaconda Adventure Race is ready for a big kick off at Dunsborough, Geographe Bay (WA), on Sunday, 2 November.

John Jacoby, Anaconda Adventure Race director, said the 2008 Anaconda race has reached record numbers of competitors.

"Over 1,500 participants have registered for the event so far. This is a 25 per cent increase from last year. It is outstanding - it makes the WA Anaconda Adventure Race amongst the biggest adventure races in the world in terms of the number of competitors," he said.

"It will be spectacular to see so many athletes competing and it will certainly be quite a show for the crowd. The Anaconda Adventure Race contributes greatly to Western Australian tourism.

"Some of our Anaconda race athletes including Richard Ussher, world adventure race champion, will also be visiting local schools on Friday, 31 October, to discuss with students the importance of being active and the benefits of doing adventure racing," Jacoby added.

The 2007 Geographe Bay race saw about 1,200 competitors fighting for the title, racing individually as well as in teams.

The 52 km race will start at 7:30 am at Old Dunsborough Boat Ramp and include ocean swimming (1.8 km), ocean kayaking (12.5 km), coastal and trail running (14.2 km), mountain biking (22 km) and a final run (1.8 km). The race is accessible to beginners, with a 'relay teams' category where participants can join up with friends and colleagues to do just one leg each.

The WA race is part of the Anaconda Adventure Race National Series which was held on the Gold Coast (QLD) on 10 August and in Forster (NSW) on 30 and 31 August. The final leg of the Series will be held in Lorne (Vic) on Sunday, 7 December.

Adventure racing attracts 'every day' people and elite athletes from around the globe. Adventure racing, a combination of off-road triathlon and surf life saving, has emerged as the big brother to marathons, road races and triathlons, and has seen a significant increase in popularity all around the world over the past 10 years.

Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda is the principal sponsor of the race series which is run by Rapid Ascent headed up by former world champion kayaker John Jacoby.

Anaconda prides itself on inspiring, equipping and enabling people to get outdoors and experience their own adventure. Anaconda currently has 12 stores around the country including two in Western Australia located in Joondalup and Innaloo.

This is the fourth year of Anaconda Adventure races, which began with the first race in Lorne in December 2005.

The races have their own unique characteristics to suit their terrain but all include a combination of running, cycling, swimming and kayaking.

Participants can find more information and register to the races by visiting www.anacondaadventurerace.com.

Anaconda can be contacted on 1300 669 137 or by visiting www.anaconda.com.au.
