MEDIA RELEASE 24 April 2009
Make the most of daylight with skylights
It has been proven that a lack of natural light in our daily lives affects our
moods and wellbeing. With winter around the corner, it's important to make the
most of less daylight by bringing the light inside.
Consumed in a responsible way, natural sunlight is the best available source of
vitamin D which plays a key role in bone strength, immune functions and much
more.
For over thirty years now, Australian householders have tried to maximise the
use of sunlight inside their homes through the use of skylights.
East Gosford (NSW) resident David Kinghorn installed Skywindows and Skytubes in
November 2007 after purchasing their townhouse and has experienced the benefits
of skylights in winter.
"In winter, we can really let the full sun come in. It's like bringing the
outside in. We don't feel the winter gloom because of the skylights. It lifts
our spirit," David said.
"Our townhouse has high ceilings, which we really liked, but not enough natural
light. We wanted to keep it light and airy so we decided to install Skywindows
in the living area, kitchen and bedroom. It allowed us to keep our privacy and
add a bright and sunny feel to the rooms.
"Visitors often don't realise that the light in the bathroom isn't on. It all
comes from the Skytube we had installed.
"Another advantage of skylights is our electricity bill is lower because we turn
our lights on later in the evening than we used to," he explained.
Michael Bonello, Managing Director of Skydome, a supplier and manufacturer of
skylight and ventilation products, as well as Marketing Chair of the Skylight
Industry Association, said skylights provide a good spread of natural light and
make rooms feel fresher.
"Skylights can let in up to three times more daylight than a wall-mounted window
of the same size," Michael explained.
"This being said, householders must select their skylights very carefully to
prevent unwanted heat loss or heat gain and to also balance the light
requirement for individual rooms," he added.
Skydome products are manufactured using Skyguard, a material that eliminates 99
per cent of harmful UV rays. The products' thermal properties also ensure
minimal heat loss during winter and minimal heat gain during summer.
Skydome products are custom-made to suit Australian conditions and the moulded
and robust flashings offer excellent watertightness. They are ideal for use in
rooms with little or no natural light to improve overall ambiance and light
levels and can be used to create lighting effects.
In addition to being used to brighten interiors, skylights are also energy
efficient as they reduce the use of electric lighting throughout the day,
meaning a reduction in a building's total energy consumption and the associated
emissions of carbon dioxide.
Skydome currently offers three types of skylights each with unique features and
applications: Skydome, Skytube and Skywindow.
The original Skydome skylights are available in a wide range of sizes and models
and come in square and rectangular variations as well as circular and pyramid
shapes.
The Skytube, a tubular skylight, is ideal for bathrooms, hallways, kitchens,
walk-in robes or any room too small to install a traditional Skydome but still
in need of natural light. Skytubes are also suited to larger rooms that require
task lighting.
Finally, Skydome's Skywindows are ideal for reclaimed attics and lofts to add
natural light and ventilation.
Skydome, a member of the Skylight Industry Association, was established in 1976
by Michael Bonello and the company and its products are officially recognised as
Australian owned and made.
