Clash of the Classics -
Australia vs New Zealand rugby heads to Norfolk Island in October
The Convict Rugby Cup, pitting the Classic Wallabies against the Classic
All-Blacks, will be played amongst the convict ruins of Norfolk Island’s
Kingston precinct on Saturday 2 October 2004.
The event will feature former international players who represented Australia
and New Zealand in the early 1990’s. Classic players for the game will include
James Grant, Willie O, Mitch Hardy, Troy Coker, Sam Scot Young, Andrew Leeds,
Warwick Waugh and Richard Harry for the Wallabies, and Mark Birtwhistle, Bruce
Hansen, Andy Earle, Bull Allan, Steve McDowell, Bruce Reheina, Murray Davie,
Jamie Joseph and Greg Smith for the All Blacks.
Other rugby personalities at the event will include ex-international coach Bob
Dwyer, all Black legends Andy Hadan and “Waka Nathan”, and ex-international and
match referee Gus Erickson.
The Convict Cup will be a warm-up event for both Classic teams, who will be
heading to Bermuda in November for the 17th Annual World Rugby Classic, where
they will represent their countries against international competition.
The rugby game will be the culmination of five days of events, with visitors
given the chance to mingle with rugby legends at the Red Eye Challenge golf day,
a “Night as a Convict” theme dinner, a mystery tour and BBQ lunch, lawn bowls,
and “Gaol Party”.
The Red Eye Challenge golf day will also give corporate challengers the chance
to test their golf game against the Classic players on Norfolk Island’s golf
course, before an after-game beverage or two in the restored convict building
club-house.
On game day, gold package holders will have access to the hospitality marquees
with complimentary drinks during the game and the change to join the players for
drinks after the game.
There are a number of Convict Cup holiday packages available including Gold or
Silver rugby supporter packages and a Classic supporter golf package. Prices for
the Rugby packages start at $1,099 for Silver and $1,299 for Gold, and places
are limited.
