MEDIA RELEASE 27 February 2008
Loy Yang Power signs agreement for carbon capture study
Loy Yang Power, which operates a 2200 MW brown coal fired power station in
Victoria's Latrobe Valley, has signed an agreement to undertake a site specific
feasibility study into carbon capture using the world's most advanced
technology.
The agreement with Brisbane-based EESTech will include technical and commercial
carbon capture and management aspects.
EESTech owns the exclusive Asia-Pacific rights to the HTC Purenergy CO2 Capture
System to extract CO2 from the flue gas stream of coal and gas fired power
stations for subsequent storage either in underground aquifers or depleted oil
and gas fields. Development of this system has been undertaken over the past
fifteen years at the world renowned Canadian Greenhouse Gas Technology Centre at
the University of Regina, Saskatchewan.
The HTC carbon capture series is the world's first pre engineered, modular built
CO2 capture system, which can be retrofitted onto existing power plants. When
integrated with EESTech's Hybrid Coal Gas Turbine, which utilises waste coal,
methane or biomass to produce the energy required, the cost of capture is
significantly reduced.
Loy Yang Power Chief Executive Ian Nethercote welcomed the agreement which he
said would further complement Loy Yang Power's commitment to brown coal research
and development.
"This project will build on our current research and development activities
which are focused on identifying new technologies to reduce CO2 emissions from
brown coal power stations.
"Identifying and developing viable new technologies will be critical to the
sustainable utilisation of the Latrobe Valley's abundant brown coal resource.
Pre drying and post carbon capture and storage technologies are seen as
prospective pathways to achieving low or near zero emissions from brown coal,"
he said.
Graeme Lynch Chief Operating Officer of EESTech said that the signing of the
agreement allows EESTech to demonstrate how its market leading CO2 management
technologies can deliver a fully optimized, site-specific CO2 processing plant
in support of Loy Yang Power's Clean Coal objectives.
"We are delighted with the signing of this agreement and look forward to our
collaboration with Loy Yang Power," he said.
