MEDIA RELEASE 28 May 2008

New outdoor adventure retailer coming to Penrith
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda will open its first Penrith store at the "At Home Penrith" complex on Saturday, 14 June 2008.

Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share in a camping & army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular daily, The Age.

"Within such close proximity to the Blue Mountains, Penrith is an obvious location for a large outdoor retail store like Anaconda. Local residents and the tourists that visit this region engage in outdoor activities year-round and now they'll have the opportunity to get kitted out before setting out on their adventure," Darvall said.

"Our research told us that Penrith was under-supplied with outdoor retail opportunities so we expect the new store to be great success from day one.

"At Anaconda we pride ourselves on inspiring, equipping and enabling people to get outdoors and experience their own adventure. Anaconda is for all outdoor types from the avid bush walker to the hardcore mountain climber and the whole spectrum of people in-between.

"The concept behind the stores is based on our belief that Australians want to be entertained and have fun whilst they are shopping so pieces of equipment such as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be tested in-store. Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock-climbing are in all our stores to give customers a feel of the ‘real experience'.

"The new store will open on Saturday at 8am. There'll be give-aways in the store and some great opening specials," added Darvall.

Anaconda currently has 11 stores – four in Queensland, one in NSW, two in Victoria, two in WA, one in SA, one in Tasmania with expansion plans throughout Australia in the near future.

Penrith Store Manager Ben McDonald, is looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to enhance the Penrith community.

"We have recruited around 30 local staff and training is already underway. The opening of this large retail store creates so many great employment opportunities, which really boosts the local community", Ben said.

The new store, to be located in the "At Home in Penrith" complex, Wolesley Street, Penrith, occupies 3,500 square metres and will offer over 35,000 products for camping, fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The North Face, Columbia, Coleman, Spinifex, Mojiko, Merrell, Garmin, Fluid Bikes, Edelrid and Denali

For customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to trial it first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them out.
