New outdoor adventure retailer coming to Carnegie
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda will open its new Carnegie store on the corner of Dandenong and Koornang Roads on Saturday, 8 November 2008.

The new store occupies a vast 3,000 square metres and offers over 35,000 products for just about every outdoor activity including camping, fishing, climbing, cycling, water sports and kayaking.

Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share in a camping & army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular daily, The Age.

"Carnegie is a great central location and is easy to reach as it's located on Dandenong Road and is well serviced by public transport. Many Melbourne residents are keen outdoor enthusiasts so it makes sense to have an Anaconda store in a location like Carnegie," Darvall said.

"We're expecting a huge response on Saturday as camping and outdoor adventure sports are particularly popular at the moment with tough economic times looming. Camping with the kids remains one of the best budget options for families – and the kids absolutely love it," added Darvall.

According to Tourism Victoria, in 2007 there were over 1.6 million Victorians camping or caravanning throughout Victoria, enjoying activities such as bushwalking, picnicking, going fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.

"At Anaconda we pride ourselves on inspiring, equipping and enabling people to get outdoors and experience their own adventure. Anaconda is for all outdoor types from the avid bush walker to the hardcore mountain climber and the whole spectrum of people in-between.

"The concept behind the stores is based on our belief that Australians want to be entertained and have fun whilst they are shopping so pieces of equipment such as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be tested in-store. Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock-climbing are in all our stores to give customers a feel of the 'real experience'.

"The new store will open on Saturday at 8 am. There'll be give-aways in the store and some great opening specials," added Darvall.

Anaconda currently has 13 stores – four in Queensland, two in NSW, three in Victoria, two in WA, one in SA, one in Tasmania with expansion plans throughout Australia in the near future.

Store Manager Tony Gould is looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to enhance the Carnegie community.

"We have recruited around 50 local staff and training is already underway. The opening of this large retail store creates so many great employment opportunities, which really boosts the local community," Tony said.

The new store, to be located in the Spotlight Centre, on the corner of Dandenong and Koornang Roads, and will offer over 35,000 products for camping, fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The North Face, Columbia, Coleman, Spinifex, Mojiko, Merrell, Garmin, Fluid Bikes, Edelrid and Denali.

For customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to trial it first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them out.

The Anaconda Carnegie store can be contacted on (03) 8533 5800.
