MEDIA RELEASE 29 April 2008
Anaconda opens first Tasmanian store on Saturday
Outdoor adventure retailer Anaconda will open its first Tasmanian store in the
Hobart suburb of Cambridge at 8 am on Saturday, 3 May 2008.
Cambridge Store Manager Aaron McClimont is looking forward to the big day.
"We have recruited around 40 local staff many of whom have a background in
outdoor and camping retailing and we're really excited about the idea of sharing
this experience with our customers.
"We have some great activities planned for day one including free Anaconda gift
bags for the first 500 customers through the door. The bag contains Anaconda
daypack, aluminium water bottle, a copy of the Outer Edge magazine and a
Spinifex Tully sleeping bag.
"I've been told that every Anaconda store opening attracts thousands of people
many of whom line up before the doors open," McClimont added.
Anaconda was founded in November 2004 by Toby Darvall, after selling his share
in a camping & army surplus wholesale business he co-founded 13 years
previously. He had formerly been a business reporter at Melbourne's popular
daily, The Age.
The concept behind the stores is based on Anaconda's belief that Australians
want to be entertained and have fun whilst they are shopping. Therefore, pieces
of equipment such as climbing gear, tents, gas lanterns and stoves can all be
tested in-store. Climbing pinnacles for indoor rock-climbing are also in all our
stores to give customers a feel of the 'real experience'.
Anaconda now has 11 stores - four in Queensland, one in NSW, two in Victoria,
two in WA one in SA and one in Tasmania with expansion plans throughout
Australia in the near future.
The new store, located at the Harvey Norman Centre, 66 Kennedy Drive, Cambridge,
occupies 3,500 square metres and offers over 35,000 products for camping,
fishing, climbing, cycling and kayaking from such famous brands as The North
Face, Columbia, Merrell, Garmin, Jamis, Edelrid as well as Anaconda exclusive
brands Spinifex, Denali, Mojiko Tactical, Canyon, Dune, Fluid and others. For
customers who haven't decided to invest in the equipment and want to trial it
first, Anaconda not only sells products but also rents a range of them out.
