MEDIA RELEASE 31 March 2008

Baby boomers use fish oil supplement to support peak brain function
New fish oil supplement Efalex Active 50+ is the first of its kind specifically developed for the over 50s to maintain healthy brain function and performance.

Efalex Active 50+ is the latest product from UK based Efamol which specialises in essential fatty acid (EFA) based products, the so-called 'good fats' that are essential for the healthy functioning of almost all cells throughout the human body. The product is distributed in Australia by Planet Health.

Efalex Active 50+ contains a unique combination of researched ingredients known for their beneficial role in maintaining working memory and brain performance. These include fish oils, phosphatidylserine, Ginkgo biloba, Vitamin B12 and folic acid.

Nancy Morse, Chief Scientific Officer of Efamol Ltd explains that the so-called 'good fats' are essential for the healthy functioning of the human body.

"About 60 per cent of the human brain is made of fat and the most abundant fatty acid in the brain is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Since our body can not produce essential fatty acids, we need to ensure that they are present in sufficient quantities in our diet or through supplements," she said.

"As we age our brain function declines so we may need a bit of help to keep it working at its peak. Omega-3 helps our brain receptors communicate the right message. If our brain receptors happen to be surrounded by the wrong fat due to the ageing process, the receptors will respond incorrectly," Morse said.

In addition, the long chain Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA) is needed by the body for the role it plays in the structure of nerve cells in the brain and the eye.

Efalex Active 50+ is available at pharmacies and health food stores Australia wide for a recommend retail price of $59.95 for 60 capsules.

Planet Health distributes only brands that meet a high standard of quality, reputation, innovation and ethics. These brands include Australian Bush Flower Essences, Lifestream, [Al'chemy] and [A'kin] from The Purist Company, Springfields and Planet Health's own Qsilica range.
