About Us
Nicola Rutzou
I've often had people comment that "PR must be in your blood", being the
daughter of a great PR man. I never really consciously decided to follow in my
Dad's footsteps. Half way through Year 12 at school I was conscious that I had
to make some sort of decision about Uni studies so opted for the highly-regarded
Bathurst PR course and it all followed from there.

Studying is a great discipline for teaching people about corporate and
business life. I've added to my initial BA in Communication with an MA in
History and then another in Organisational Communication. I think that's enough
degrees for now, although I never stop learning.
My 20 year career in PR has been a varied experience. It started in consulting
and ventured to a variety of in-house roles.
At Panasonic and Dick Smith Electronics I realised that Australians love new
technology and I honed my skills at telling them about all the latest and
greatest.
At Woolworths and Integral Energy I learnt about the demands of the news media.
There's no such thing as a nine to five, Monday to Friday world so I had to
adapt.
Returning to Dennis Rutzou Public Relations last year has been a rewarding
experience for me. After 12 and a half years in other workplaces it's nice to be
in such a nurturing environment. It also gives me the chance to learn about
operating a small business.
To me public relations is about open and transparent communication, not
spin-doctoring. Sure, you need to sometimes be selective about what you release
into the public domain, but I have never advised a client to tell anything but
the truth regardless of the situation. It always comes back to haunt you.
Outside my working life I'm really passionate about my favourite hobby,
photography. I'm a member of a local camera club and I really get lots out of
it. I won my first photography competition recently which was really thrilling.
