I have heard it time and time again from both colleagues and professors-that to choose a career in PR is to sacrifice ones self to the ‘dark side’ of communications. However, after taking the plunge and stepping into the industry I have found myself wondering, “If PR is so dark, so utterly evil, why is it that I can finally see the light?”

After four years of studying a Journalism/Communications and Media double degree I have found myself continually exposed to both sides of the communications debate. However, fuelled with a passion for people, a love for writing and a creative mind, public relations has become a career path that I am excited to leap into.

If you ask my friends or family they will tell you that I have two obsessions. The first, I am what you would call a film junkie and have often been kidnapped on a Saturday night by friends who (for some reason) do not share this enthusiasm. The second is travel and I would love nothing more than to one day be involved in the travel industry. However, until then I can often be found in front of a good film, scouring travel agents and the internet for my next big adventure, searching for the perfect wave or just enjoying the outdoors.

In the next year I will have completed my studies and will be ready for the next chapter in my life, whether this be travelling the world and documenting my many adventures, or jumping straight into my career in public relations. But for now I hope to learn as much as I can from my colleagues at DRPR, and perhaps convince my professors that ‘the dark side’ isn’t so dark after all.
