The question most PR grads don’t ask themselves
Sep 29th
One decision all PR graduates are faced with towards the end of their uni degree is whether they want to step into the world of in-house or agency PR. For me the decision was clear cut, agency life seemed the one for me, at least, I decided, for the first few years of my career anyway.
Working in boutique versus larger agency PR
However, something that wasn’t discussed and I didn’t even give a thought to was the difference between boutique and larger agencies. During my final semester of uni I interned with a larger PR agency and was offered a job More >
PR Mentor – Training & Mentoring for Small Business PR
Aug 9th
Every organisation has a good story to tell and must tell that story to its customers to grow the business and increase market share in a competitive environment. Public relations is a marketing investment that will help raise the public profile of your organisation over time to create a position of market leadership.
At Dennis Rutzou Public Relations (DRPR), we have often witnessed the great PR potential of small businesses and start-ups, yet see them suffer the frustration of not being able to commit to a full public relations program at a time when PR can make a significant contribution to their More >

Is honesty the best policy?
Aug 5th
Sitting around the dinner table last night my family and I were having a typical ‘solve the problems of the worlds’ conversation over a few glasses of red and the topic of respecting politicians came up.
Everyone around the table had some very valid points, but the one consensus that surfaced, regardless of political persuasion, age or gender, was that the Prime Minister of Australia should be referred to as just that, ‘Prime Minister’.
This may sound odd at first, but there have been several examples in recent media coverage, especially in interviews and even in the leader’s debate held a few More >

Microworkers – a case of ethics?
Jul 29th
Cherry Picked recently blogged about a new site, ‘Microworkers’ – “Think of it as Santa’s Little Helpers for odd jobs. Except you’re not Santa, and they’re not doing it for love. Don’t have time to edit a cover letter for that must-have job? Simply become an “employer” and hire someone (a microworker) to do it for you. Can’t seem to attract traffic to your work-of-art blog? Start a campaign and watch your numbers rise. You can even ask workers to product place your latest business venture on discussion forums.”
I have to admit I was intrigued, we are all looking for ways to More >

Social media censorship – Can companies control what employees are saying about them?
Jul 22nd
I was meeting with a client recently who raised the issue of staff’s interaction on social media and whether the organisation should have a social media policy that would ‘forbid’ its staff to comment about the company on their personal social media profiles (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
Although this may sound like an appealing way to avoid any ‘damage control’ situation, it may well bring more problems then solutions…
• In this day and age, people are used to expressing their opinions and ideas and sharing information on the internet. Trying to ‘forbid’ them to do such a thing could backfire and More >
The perfect pitch – it’s personal
Jul 15th
After attending a PRIA event last night called the ‘Perfect Pitch’, I retired for the evening feeling enlightened, yet slightly deflated.
It was a well organised night and a great atmosphere for meeting some new people (please note my deliberate avoidance of the term ‘networking’- the thought of straining for ‘mutually beneficial’ relationships rather than a simple ‘hey how’s it going, I like your shoes’ over a glass of bubbly makes me cringe- but that’s a whole different blog in the making)
The guest speakers were great and offered insight into the day to day happenings at a women’s lifestyle mag, a More >

What did you say? – Solution! Why?
Jul 8th
According to the very large Macquarie Dictionary on my desk, the word solution means “the act of solving a problem” and when used in that context (and a few others) it’s a really lovely word.
However, you’ll find it splashed about on company websites and in most cases it doesn’t mean ‘the act of solving a problem”. It often means “we didn’t know what other word to use so we went with ‘solution’”. A lot of More >
