Not every company needs to be on social media
Oct 13th
A few years ago we found that potential clients were all rather resistant to the use of social media in their PR programs. Most couldn’t see how Facebook, Twitter or YouTube could possibly be of benefit.
Strangely enough that tide seems to have swung back the other way and now everyone thinks they need a Facebook and Twitter presence but for many companies it’s a waste of time and can actually have a negative impact.
In recent weeks we’ve had two such companies profess their desire to be on Facebook particularly — one was a medical technology company and the other a More >
Social media – to jump or not to jump
Jun 9th
Have you gone through one day lately without hearing or reading the words ‘Facebook’, ‘Twitter’, ‘LinkedIn’, ‘YouTube’ or ‘social media’? If so, you must be on a holiday on a desert island (without your smartphone!).
Everyone is talking about them.
Through my engagement with small businesses, I hear a lot of people telling them: “You should really be on Facebook! Are you on Twitter?”.
There’s no secret here, social media does offer great opportunities for business. But for a small business with limited resources, the social media discourse is one that can be confusing, daunting or even scary!
So when should a small business More >
Thousands attend Facebook campaign
May 17th
As an avid cyclist and user of Sydney’s cycle ways I was excited to attend the WOOP! Rolling Festival on the weekend. WOOP! Rolling Festival celebrated the newly finished Bourke Street cycle way which runs from Waterloo to Woolloomooloo.
The amazing thing about this event is that it was started through Facebook. Jackie Lau co-founded a Facebook group called I love Sydney Bike Lanes & Cycle Ways in response to a campaign by Alan Jones against the City of Sydney council’s new bike paths. Through this group, she organised and promoted WOOP! Rolling Festival by creating a Facebook event.
The Facebook group now has More >
2011 PR industry trends – do you agree?
Jan 12th
Moving into 2011 there are a number of predictions floating around about what this year might hold. Everything from the top 10 products of CES 2011 (including tablets, 3D TVs, internet enabled televisions and “smart” appliances) to the future of social media.
I therefore thought this was a great time to look at the trends that I think will be seen in the PR industry in 2011. The best article I read and which I agree with the most is one from Mashable, a social media news site, so I will summarise what they had to say here.
What does the future More >
Your Facebook fans are worth $136.38 according to Syncapse, do you agree?
Dec 9th
Syncapse, a social media management company, recently conducted a study around measuring the Return on Investment (ROI) of Facebook.
According to the study each Facebook fan is worth $136.38.
At the Sydney Bloggers Festival I recently attended, the overall consensus was that you really cannot put an ROI figure on your Facebook page. Therefore when I saw this statement from Syncapse on a blog post by Jeff Bullas I was intrigued as to how on earth they came up with this number. How the study worked was that Syncapse collected data from over 4,000 consumers across North America about the top 20 More >
2009’s most successful gum launch
Mar 8th
The last 12 months have seen their fair share of social media campaigns for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands. In Australia, we can remember the Pepsi ‘Refresh project’ and Crust Pizza’s #CrustFreePizzaFriday Twitter campaign among others.
Chewing gum is not typically what I would call the ‘hip’ thing in consumer land so launching a new gum would probably be quite challenging. However one company has managed to cut through the clutter successfully.
Wrigley launched in Australia its ‘5’ gum in mid 2009. According to a Wrigley ad featured in Convenience World (February/March 2010 issue), the company claims it to be ‘the most successful gum launch in More >
Using social media to drive promotions and customer service
Feb 8th
I really think more businesses are starting to ‘get’ the potential of social media and the way in which some businesses are using it is very impressive and clever.
For instance, we can all agree that the @BigPondTeam has really done some great things leveraging Twitter. Twitter is the perfect channel for having a whinge and I know from personal experience how some people love to whinge about Telstra and BigPond (I used to work at a Telstra Shop many moons ago). Then all of a sudden this big corporation replies to your frustrated tweet (and pretty quickly, I’ll add), asking More >
How online networking can change your life
Nov 11th
We’ve all heard stories of how online communities can impact people’s lives, like connecting with long lost friends, finding love, landing a new job, making business deals, etc. Recently something exciting happened to a friend of mine and all because of the power of tagging on social media.
My good friend Nathan, a finance manager for a leading retail chain, recently got invited to attend a swimwear photo shoot for DNA magazine at the Ivy pool bar in Sydney.
Not one to miss the opportunity of half-naked models, Nathan took along his trusty everyday digital camera. Excited about some of the shots and More >
